Title 1

Hunters Creek Elementary School
School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
2025-2026  School Year

Title I Schoolwide Program

Hunters Creek Elementary is a North Carolina public school serving PreK-5th grade students. It is also a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) themed school within the Onslow County School System.

We recognize that educating the whole child is a collaborative process, and we believe that the education of our students requires an ongoing partnership between the home, school, and community. To ensure meaningful parent and family engagement in the planning and implementation of the Title I program, we will implement the following activities at Hunters Creek Elementary.

This policy outlines minimum required activities; however, additional activities may occur throughout the year that are not specifically listed here.

Written Policy

Hunters Creek Elementary staff, parents, and families will collaboratively develop a written Parent and Family Engagement Policy. This policy will be distributed annually to all parents and families of students. The document will be shared at the start of the 2019-20 school year, and it will be included in the school handbook and beginning-of-year paperwork in subsequent years. Additionally, it will be provided during intake meetings for new students and as needed during students' time at Hunters Creek Elementary. The policy will be reviewed annually at a designated Hunters Creek Elementary Strategic Planning team meeting, considering district, state, and federal mandates as well as the school’s theme, demographics, and community needs.

Opportunities for Regular Public Meetings

An Annual Fall Meeting will be held in conjunction with "Open House" to:

  • Provide an overview of the Title I Program.
  • Inform parents and families about the school’s Title I Schoolwide designation.
  • Encourage parent participation on the Hunters Creek Elementary Strategic Planning Team.
  • Provide information about grade-level expectations.
  • Share STEM learning opportunities available to students.
  • Offer information on parent and family engagement opportunities, assessment data, school performance profiles, and methods for measuring student progress (if available at the time of the Annual Meeting).
  • Evaluate and improve current programs and activities.
  • Determine parent interests for upcoming education and family engagement activities.
  • Solicit feedback from parents and families in the development of the School Improvement Plan and the Parent and Family Engagement Policy for the upcoming year.

Regular Title I Parent Meetings and PreK Parent Committee Meetings will provide ongoing information, support, and resources throughout the school year. These meetings will focus on HCE’s school theme and academic programs. Family engagement activities will include events such as the Global Holiday Celebration, Math/STEM Night, Read Across America Celebration, Global Passport Festival, and open house events. Parents and families will be strongly encouraged to attend other school events, volunteer in classrooms, and engage in academic learning activities at home. For the HCE PreK program, parent committee meetings and classroom activities will occur at the end of each unit.

Parents are encouraged to attend and participate in the Onslow County Schools District Parent Advisory Council and the Hunters Creek Elementary School Strategic Planning Team.

Training Opportunities

Training topics will be determined based on a needs assessment and parent and family feedback. Surveys will be conducted annually to assess interests and needs, with appropriate training opportunities scheduled accordingly.

  • Events such as Back to School Night, Step Up to Success Nights, and parent/student conferences will be scheduled to provide an overview of state curriculum standards, recent assessments, strategies to improve student achievement, and ways to monitor student progress (e.g., weekly folders, progress reports, report cards, phone communication, and conferences).
  • Parents will be notified in advance of all scheduled activities.
  • Additional meetings may be requested by parents to address specific questions or concerns.
  • Instructional plans and assessment information will be communicated via social media, weekly planners, and teacher websites.

Coordination with Other Programs

We aim to establish communication and collaborate with other school programs and external agencies to ensure ongoing support for parents and families. Our efforts include:

  • Informing parents of community resources, such as food banks, recreational programs, and summer opportunities.
  • Inviting community members to participate in school assemblies and programs, with notifications sent via flyers and social media.
  • Distributing food donations from local organizations through programs such as backpack food drives.
  • Hosting Clinical Teacher Interns and Nursing students from East Carolina University, UNC Wilmington, and the University of Mount Olive to help prepare them as future educators and healthcare professionals.
  • Supporting the work of the Military Student Liaison.

Opportunities for LEP and SWD Parents

We are committed to supporting parents with limited English proficiency (LEP) and parents of students with disabilities (SWD) in their participation in their children’s education. As part of our ongoing efforts:

  • Spanish translations of district forms, including the "Math and Science Connection" guide, will be made available to assist with school access.
  • HCE-specific forms and documents will be translated into Spanish as needed.
  • The EC Department will provide Spanish versions of all forms and documents.
  • All parents are invited to participate on the HCE Strategic Planning Team and are welcome to visit the school at any time.

Coordination and Integration of Parent Involvement

Hunters Creek Elementary coordinates with various staff members and programs to support parent and family engagement. These include:

  • Head Start
  • English Language Learners/EL District Leaders
  • School nurse, counselor, military liaison, and social worker
  • Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
  • Public preschool programs
  • Onslow County Schools Preschool Information Transition Fair

By coordinating efforts with these programs, we aim to strengthen parent involvement and support students' success.
